I ordered the M (10-12) for my eight year old. He's taller (51 inches) and heavier (78 lbs) than average. It fits slightly big for him this year, but he will get another year out of it easily. It's not at all puffy, which is good, because he does NOT like puffy coats. As for cold weather, we have not worn it yet. It's a nice color green too. Not neon, not too bright.
